Your first round.

The gear's in the trunk, the tee time is booked, and now it's happening. Here's the whole day, in order, minute by minute, so nothing catches you off guard.

Arrive 30–45 minutes early. Check in, small bucket at the range, ten minutes on the putting green.

Play the forward tees. Don't hit driver on the first tee. Farthest from the hole goes first. Score at the next tee, never on the green.

Pick up at double par. Nobody asks what you shot, and "I picked up a bunch" is a completely normal answer.

Arriving

Get there 30–45 minutes before your tee time. This is not padding. Here's exactly what it buys you.

Do not go to the range before a round and try to fix your swing. That is a completely different activity. The pre-round warm-up has one job: find out what your body is doing today so you can play accordingly. If you're pulling everything left today, then today you aim right. You don't fix it. You play it.

If you only have ten minutes, spend it here, not the range. Roll five long putts to learn today's green speed, because fast or slow changes everything. Then make ten three-footers in a row, because tapping in short putts with confidence is worth more strokes than a good drive.

T-3

The first tee

The most nervous you will be all day. It's also, statistically, the least important shot of your round. Here's how it goes:

  1. The starter (if there is one) checks your group in and tells you when to go. They may mention pace expectations. Listen, that's the whole job of that conversation.
  2. Pick your tees. Every hole has multiple tee boxes at different distances. As a beginner, play the forward-most tees your group is using. Not the back ones. Ever. See the box below.
  3. Order of play: on the first tee it's random. Someone flips a tee or just says "you go." After that, whoever scored lowest on the previous hole tees off first. That's called having the honor.
  4. When it's your turn: tee it up, run your routine, swing. Everyone else is silent and standing behind you. That's them being polite, not them judging you.
  5. You will probably hit a bad one. Everyone knows. Nobody cares. Pick up your tee, put your club away, and walk. The faster you move on, the faster everyone forgets.

This is the most under-taken advice in golf. The back tees are 6,800 yards and are designed for people who hit a driver 260. If you hit it 180, playing from back there means every single hole is unreachable, you'll hit four shots to every green, you'll shoot 130, and you will not have fun.

From the forward tees, holes are reachable, you'll make some pars, and you'll finish in four hours. There is zero shame in this. The people who care about which tees you played are not people whose opinions matter.

Don't hit driver on the first tee. Hit a hybrid or a 5-iron. You're nervous, your muscles are tight, and the driver is the least forgiving club you own. Put a ball in the fairway, walk down there calm, and start your round from a good place. You can hit driver on hole 3 when your hands stop shaking.

How a hole actually works

If you've never played, here's the loop. It's the same eighteen times.

step 1

The tee shot

Everyone hits from the tee box, one at a time, in order. This is the only time you can use a tee. Longest hitter isn't first, the honor from the last hole is.

step 2

Walk or drive to your balls

Everyone plays their own ball from wherever it landed. Now the order changes: whoever is farthest from the hole hits first. That's "away". It holds for the whole rest of the hole.

step 3

Approach shots

Keep hitting, farthest player first, until everyone's ball is on the green. This may take you several shots. That's completely normal.

step 4

The green

Mark your ball with a coin if it's in someone's way. Fix your ball mark. Putt, farthest first, still. Keep putting until it's in the hole.

step 5

Get off the green

Everyone's in? Grab the flag, put it back, walk to the cart immediately. Do NOT stand on the green writing scores. The group behind you is waiting.

step 6

Score at the next tee

Write down everyone's strokes while you're standing at the next tee box, not on the green you just left. Then do it all again. Eighteen times.

Reading the course

Words for the ground you're standing on.

Tee boxThe flat mowed area where the hole starts. Marked by two colored markers. You must tee up between them and no more than two club-lengths behind.
FairwayThe wide short-mowed path to the green. This is where you want to be. Life is easy here.
RoughThe longer grass on either side. Harder to hit from. Deeper the grass, harder the shot.
BunkerSand pit. Don't touch the sand right around your ball before you swing. Rake it when you leave.
Penalty areaWater, or marked scrubland. Red or yellow stakes. Add a stroke, drop, play on.
Out of bounds (OB)White stakes. Outside the course entirely. Costs you the most of anything.
GreenThe very short grass around the hole. Putter only. Treat it like it's made of glass.
Fringe / collarThe slightly longer ring right around the green. You can putt from here, and usually should.
Pin / flagThe stick in the hole. Also called the flagstick. Its color often tells you if the pin is front, middle, or back of the green.
ApronThe mowed approach in front of the green. Friendly place to land.
DoglegA hole that bends left or right partway down. You can't see the green from the tee.
The turnThe break between hole 9 and hole 10. Usually there's a snack shack.

Courses tell you distances in a few ways, and they all mean distance to the center of the green, not the flag:

Cart rules

Not intuitive, and getting it wrong is a fast way to annoy the staff.

The efficient move: drop your partner at their ball with two clubs, drive to yours, hit, then come back for them. Two people hitting at roughly the same time is how a foursome stays on pace. Waiting for each other to walk back and forth is how a round hits five and a half hours.

Pace of play, the actual rules

Read the etiquette page for the full version. Here's the beginner-specific version, because pace is where beginners cause real problems. Not by being bad. By being slow while being bad.

  1. Be ready when it's your turn. Club chosen, glove on, routine started. Don't begin thinking when it becomes your turn.
  2. Ready golf is fine in a casual round. If you're ready and the away player isn't, just hit. Everyone will thank you.
  3. Play a provisional if your ball might be lost. Saves a whole walk back.
  4. Three minutes to look for a ball. Max. Then drop and go.
  5. Maximum strokes per hole: double par. Hit 8 on a par 4? Pick it up, write 8, walk to the next tee. This is not quitting, it's being a good playing partner.
  6. Score at the next tee, never on the green.
  7. Keep up with the group in front, not ahead of the group behind. That's the actual standard. If the fairway ahead of you is empty and there's a group waiting on you, you're slow.

Picking up your ball is allowed and encouraged. A casual round is not a tournament, and nobody is checking your card against the USGA rulebook. If a hole has gotten away from you, pick it up. You'll enjoy the round more, and so will everyone behind you.

So you don't spend four hours feeling bad about numbers that were always going to happen.

Score bands are widely cited rough figures, not survey data. Treat them as a sanity check on your expectations, nothing more.

Forget your score. Count these instead.

Did you have fun? That's the whole product. That's what you paid for.
Did you keep pace? That's what makes people invite you again.
Did you hit two shots that felt amazing? That's the hook. That's why you'll be back.
Did you make a par? Even one. Even on a par 3. That's a real achievement on day one.

Nobody is going to ask what you shot. And if they do, "I have no idea, I picked up a bunch" is a completely normal and respected answer.

When it goes badly

It will. Here's what to do about it, because how you handle a bad stretch determines whether you enjoy the other fifteen holes.

You are not out there to shoot a number. You're outside for four hours, walking around a beautifully maintained park with people you like, occasionally hitting a ball. The golf is the excuse. The rest is the point. Every good golfer will tell you the same thing.
